Legacy of Environmental Leadership: Dr. Tom Okurut’s Journey and Vision for Uganda
Dr. Tom Okurut, born in 1972 to John and Mary Okurut, emerged as a prominent figure in Uganda’s environmental sector. His journey began at Makerere University, where he earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Forestry in 1995. After completing his undergraduate studies, at the age of 25, Tom pursued further education abroad, enrolling at the University of Aberdeen in Scotland. In 1998, he obtained a Master of Science degree in Environmental Resource Management, further honing his expertise in sustainable land management and biodiversity conservation. Armed with a wealth of knowledge and a fervent commitment to environmental conservation, Dr. Okurut embarked on a distinguished career dedicated to protecting Uganda’s natural heritage. He held pivotal roles such as Senior Research Officer at the National Forestry Resources Research Institute, where he contributed significantly to sustainable land management practices and biodiversity conservation efforts.
In 2011, Dr. Okurut’s leadership and advocacy culminated in his appointment as the Executive Director of the National Environment Management Authority (NEMA). Under his visionary guidance, NEMA spearheaded initiatives to regulate and monitor environmental activities across Uganda, solidifying its position at the forefront of environmental governance. His untimely death marked the end of a remarkable chapter in Uganda’s environmental history. However, Dr. Okurut’s legacy of passion, dedication, and love for the natural world continues to inspire future generations to protect and preserve Uganda’s natural heritage.
