Kumi Hosts International Day of Persons with Disabilities Celebrations

The International Day of Persons with Disabilities (IDPD) celebrations kicked off in Kumi, Uganda, with a vibrant procession led by the Police Brass Band and Kumi’s Resident District Commissioner (RDC). The event, held at the Boma Grounds, aimed to promote inclusivity, equality, and empowerment of persons with disabilities (PWDs) ¹.

As part of the celebrations, various exhibitors, including the Kumi Orthopedics Center, showcased their services and products designed to support PWDs. The center offered free wheelchairs, medical tests, and diagnosis to the attendees. Delegates and district leaders were also present to show their support for the cause.

The IDPD celebrations are observed annually on December 3, with the global theme for 2024 being “Amplifying the leadership of persons with disabilities for an inclusive and sustainable future” ². In Uganda, the national theme is “Improved Household Incomes; for the Wellbeing of Persons with Disabilities” ¹.

The event serves as a reminder of the importance of promoting equality, inclusion, and participation of PWDs in all aspects of society. It also highlights the need to address the unique challenges faced by PWDs, including poverty, inequality, and limited access to education and employment opportunities.

As the world celebrates the IDPD, it is essential to recognize the contributions and leadership of PWDs in creating a more inclusive and sustainable future for all.
