Young FDC Leader Mercy Marion Alupo Challenges Uganda’s Speaker of Parliament

In a surprising move, Mercy Marion Alupo, a prominent member of the Forum for Democratic Change (FDC) youth league and the party’s treasurer, has announced her candidacy to unseat Uganda’s Speaker of Parliament, Anita Annet Among. Alupo made her announcement at Soroti Arrow Square over the weekend, where the FDC leadership had convened to encourage members to register digitally.

The event attracted a large crowd of FDC supporters, who greeted Alupo’s declaration with enthusiastic applause. Alupo, known for her charisma and youthful energy, promised to bring a fresh perspective to the Speaker’s role, focusing on the needs of the people and the promotion of democratic values.

In her speech, Alupo criticized the current leadership for its authoritarian tendencies and neglect of the youth and vulnerable populations. “There will be no unopposed this time in Bukedea. I am coming and I will win the race. I have the support of the ordinary people,” Alupo asserted confidently.

The FDC leadership, including Party President Patrick Amuriat, welcomed Alupo’s decision, lauding her bravery and dedication to the party’s principles. They pledged full support for her campaign, which is anticipated to be a fierce contest against the incumbent Speaker.

Alupo’s entry into the race has injected new energy into Uganda’s political scene, with many viewing her as a refreshing change in a system long dominated by veteran politicians. Her campaign is set to highlight issues affecting the youth, women, and marginalized communities.

The contest to unseat Speaker Anita Among has just become more intriguing, and Uganda’s political landscape will be closely watching as Alupo’s campaign progresses.
